Last Sunday Hansraj and his friends were visited on the South Bronx Artists’ Studio tour (or whatever the event was called.) Here are a few shots of some preparations the day before.

Isaac in the Park
With the heatwave mercifully having passed on, Celebrate Brooklyn got off to it’s 30th start tonight with the great Isaac Hayes. Here are a few snaps of the crowd and the action.
Some Terracotta Style
Some Terracotta Style.
The Childs Restaurant is in a pretty rundown condition, but fortunately has a preservation order on it. Fortunate because of the wonderful terracotta decoration on the frontage.
The building was constructed in 1923 in the heyday of Coney Island as a resort, when hundreds of thousands of people visited the beach each day. This probably accounts for the enormous size of the building. While relatively modest in width, it must be a city block deep or more. I can only imaging the clamor that there must have been when it was crowded with hungry beach goers.
This is a ‘mosaic’ shot of the building that I took some time ago. It’s composed from about twelve individual images.
One of the nice things about this building is that though the taggers over the years have used it bare brick walls for their graffiti, they nonetheless do not touch the fantastic terracotta decorations.
Here are some details of the Childs Restaurant on the boardwalk at Coney Island.

Taking refuge from the heat
Last Sunday it was only in the eighties (26-29°C), but this weekend it hit the mid nineties with lots of humidity. So I’m taking a break from the great outdoors today, which gives me the chance to post some more shots from June 1st.
It was a beautiful day last Sunday with fresh breezes and the occasional cloud, unlike today’s unremitting, brutal baking from the sun.
The ‘race’ between the two masted schooner ‘Imagine’ and the small sloop who’s name I did not get was quite entertaining. Though I’m not sure of the drink imbibing paying passengers in the main deck area actually appreciated the overtaking maneuver and the jibe around the bows of the sloop. But it was fun to watch from the shore. Also look out for the wonderful bronze sculptures in the park along the Hudson River

A Sunday Stroll in New York City
It was a beautiful sunny last Sunday so starting out in Brooklyn, where I live, I headed over to the Battery Park and Riverside Park area on the southern tip of Manhattan, where there was sure to be lots going on. Here is a first batch of shots.
I will endeavor to post most more from this session, including some volley ball and some sailing on the Hudson. But it’s getting late so I’ll just post this thing, and add some captions tomorrow. So goodnight, and here’s a pretty tune from the dim past…

Backpacking in Prospect Park
Last week I purchased a new back pack to carry the camera kit. It has room for a fair few lenses, and do-dahs one needs to carry about. There’s all sorts of compartments (Velcro adjustable), pockets and nooks and crannies and lots of ways into the bag. I like this thing because it’s a “swing” type that loops over one shoulder and can be swung around to the front, very quickly where the camera with the longer of my two lenses attached fits nicely and very quickly accessed via the side entrance. Yet it’s not very large. Maybe half the size of a small backpack. This is going to greatly increase the camera’s mobility!
Other nice touches include the soft cloth tethered inside the main compartment – great for covering lenses and LDC panels, and inside the front pocket is a drawstring weatherproof bad to cover the whole shebang in a storm.
So, throwing my kit over my shoulder (if you’ll forgive the illusion) I hoped on my bike and took a spin round the park…
I have the great good fortune to live two long blocks from Prospect Park in Brooklyn. It has a nice easy 3 and a bit mile loop to cycle/run/roller skate around, and many paths inside it’s 300+ Acres and a lake. Consequently I am often to be found there in my free time. Right now the plants around the water margins are looking particularly lush.

The lily and the water plant shots were also assisted by my Bogen Manfrotto Magic Arm clamped to the crossbar of my bike. It’s a great portable camera support, and often much more convenient that a tripod. For these shots I also had help from a small tree which I leaned the bike against for additional bracing.
The new Camera put to use
Here are some shots from my first ever outing with the new Olympus e510, which you are also up on my Picasa page.

A walk in the woods
So this is the new blog. Using WordPress. It took me a little while to get going because I had trouble seeing the name of my MySQL server (it was right there on the screen), but finally got past that hurdle, and then found the sticky post in the forum that explained how to sold the inability to post pictures, and so here we are “up and running” as they say.
So let’s celebrate with by listing a few pictures from last week when Gerry and I went up state. These were taken on our stroll along part of the Appalachian trial here in New York state. Just East of Cold Spring on Hudson.
You can make out the trail in this Google Satellite view
The entire length of our hike was in the woods, and so green is a prominent theme.
