Some Terracotta Style.
The Childs Restaurant is in a pretty rundown condition, but fortunately has a preservation order on it. Fortunate because of the wonderful terracotta decoration on the frontage.
The building was constructed in 1923 in the heyday of Coney Island as a resort, when hundreds of thousands of people visited the beach each day. This probably accounts for the enormous size of the building. While relatively modest in width, it must be a city block deep or more. I can only imaging the clamor that there must have been when it was crowded with hungry beach goers.
This is a ‘mosaic’ shot of the building that I took some time ago. It’s composed from about twelve individual images.
One of the nice things about this building is that though the taggers over the years have used it bare brick walls for their graffiti, they nonetheless do not touch the fantastic terracotta decorations.
Here are some details of the Childs Restaurant on the boardwalk at Coney Island.
